10 tea facts

We Dutch drink liters of it. Did you know that tea is the second most consumed drink in the world after water? What else do you know about this popular drink? We have listed 10 tea facts.

1 Worldwide, about 3 billion kilograms of tea are grown every year

2 China is the world's largest producer of tea. Other important tea producers are: Sri Lanka, China, India, Kenya and Japan

3 Tea also contains caffeine. Despite the fact that caffeine in tea is called theine , by caffeine we mean the same as theine . Looking for a caffeine-free tea? Go for the herbal infusions, with 100% herbs.

4 Green, white and black, it's the same tea plant. Tea is the dried leaf of the Camellia sinensis plant† The difference between black, green and white is in the processing. Green tea is not oxidized. Black tea undergoes a more extensive oxidation process and naturally blackens by reaction with oxygen. Witte thee is first steamed and then dried immediately. 

5 Black tea is a favorite! Many different types of tea are drunk, but black tea is the favourite. Younger tea drinkers (16-34 years) often drink fruit tea and fresh mint tea

6 Coffee and tea are mainly drunk at home. In addition, people drink tea on visitors, at work and in a restaurant.

7 Most tea drinkers drink tea from tea bags. A quarter also sometimes drinks loose tea in a tea infuser, –clothespin of filter

8 There are an estimated 1,500 different flavors of tea.

9 Only the top of a mature plant is picked to produce tea. A new top grows in 7 to 15 days

10 It takes about 4 to 12 years for a tea plant to produce tea seeds.
